IQM National Inclusion Champions 2025 / 2026
Babington Academy has been awarded Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) National Champion status, placing it among an elite group of schools recognised nationally for their outstanding commitment to inclusive education.
The award follows Babington’s previous recognition as an IQM Centre of Excellence and reflects the academy’s continuing work to break down barriers and ensure every learner feels they belong.
Only a small number of schools achieve National Champion status, which celebrates those that not only embed inclusion within their own setting but also share best practice with schools across the country.
Serving a community where 48% of students are Pupil Premium and 63% fall within the lowest decile for deprivation, Babington Academy has developed innovative and compassionate approaches to meet complex challenges. Through a personalised ‘Flex’ curriculum which includes more than 50 targeted interventions, and close collaboration with partners such as the NHS, Police, social care, and local businesses, the school ensures every student has the tools to succeed.
Principal, Fiona Laywood said:
“Being named an IQM National Champion reflects the hard work and dedication of our staff, the resilience of our students, and the support of our families. Inclusion is not just part of what we do, it is who we are. We are proud to share our practice with others and to help shape the future of inclusive education.”
We are proud of our Designated Specialist Provision for Speech, Language and Communication Needs, which has grown to 30 places and plays a key role in our inclusive approach.
Babington is recognised as a Communication Friendly Setting, reflecting our commitment to creating an environment where communication is understood, supported and valued across the school. We believe every young person should have the confidence and skills to express themselves, build strong relationships and thrive.
As an IQM National Champion, the academy will showcase its work to other schools locally, nationally, and potentially internationally, supporting IQM’s aim to spread inclusive practice worldwide.
