Modern Foreign Languages

At Babington, we believe that learning a language is a valuable life skill that sets young people up for success in an increasingly globalised world. Every student studies both French and Spanish at KS3, giving them the opportunity to develop strong communication skills and a deeper appreciation of other cultures. Our lessons are designed to be engaging and enjoyable, allowing students to experience the joy of learning languages.

Our MFL curriculum focuses on developing the four key linguistic skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) and provides a strong foundation for success at GCSE. Students complete regular homework using the LanguageNut platform, helping them to consolidate their learning and build confidence outside the classroom.

At KS4, students can choose to continue their language journey by studying one or both languages as part of their GCSE options. The course covers eight modules in total which are very engaging such as: holidays, technology, and the environment, while also deepening students’ understanding of grammar and linguistic structures.

We follow the Edexcel Pearson GCSE in French and Spanish, which consists of four equally weighted components:

  • Speaking (25%)
  • Listening (25%)
  • Reading (25%)
  • Writing (25%)

Beyond the classroom, we offer a variety of extra-curricular opportunities to help enrich students’ language learning experiences. These include becoming Language Ambassadors in Years 8 and 9, entering the National Language Competition led by GCHQ, participating in Business Language Challenge events, attending educational trips to France and Spain, and hearing from inspirational external speakers.
