Form Time Reading
The Babington Way for Form Reading
At Babington, we know that shared reading improves literacy skills, supports wellbeing, and encourages young people to broaden their understanding of the world. All students in Years 7, 8, and 9 read a variety of non-fiction texts during form time, exploring recent news articles, extracts from biographies, and celebrating cultural events. These sessions are designed to broaden each student’s understanding of the world they live in and the events that have shaped it, as well as to explore the aspirational stories of others.
Form time reading sessions aim not only to inform, but also to provide students with a platform to discuss their opinions and ideas through debate tasks and student-led discussions. Students are encouraged to consider their own views, reflect on the views of others, and understand the importance of being an active citizen.
Students are responsible for:
- Engaging positively in reading sessions
- Being respectful during discussions
- Persevering, especially when an idea is harder to understand
- Keeping an open mind
Form Tutors are responsible for:
- Creating a climate of mutual respect during reading sessions
- Modelling good reading skills
- Encouraging students to be enquiring and brave
- Rewarding students who demonstrate positive attitudes in the sessions
